US, South Korea Agree on Extended Deterrence Against North Korea

The US and South Korea on Wednesday unveiled a new agreement aimed at deterring North Korea’s nuclear threat and aggression.

President Joe Biden hosted an afternoon Rose Garden news conference with South Korean counterpart Yoon Suk-yeol and announced the plan, which includes periodically docking US nuclear-armed submarines in South Korea amid increasing nuclear tests from Pyongyang. This has not happened since the 1980s.

“A nuclear attack by North Korea against the United States or its allies and partners is unacceptable, and will result in the end of whatever regime were to take such an action,” Biden declared.
