Florida Gov. Ron Desantis is facing a lawsuit filed by Walt Disney Parks and Resorts on Wednesday accusing him of retaliating against the company for speaking out against a bill restricting classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity.

"Disney regrets that it has come to this. But having exhausted efforts to seek a resolution, the Company is left with no choice but to file this lawsuit to protect its cast members, guests, and local development partners from a relentless campaign to weaponize government power against Disney in retaliation for expressing a political viewpoint unpopular with certain State officials,” the company said. The lawsuit was filed on the day that the DeSantis-picked board to oversee Disney’s special taxing district voted to invalidate an agreement reached between the entertainment giant and the outgoing board. Under it, the company would maintain control over much of its vast footprint in Central Florida for 30 years.

“We are unaware of any legal right that a company has to operate its own government or maintain special privileges not held by other businesses in the state,” DeSantis communications director Taryn Fenske said in response. “This lawsuit is yet another unfortunate example of their hope to undermine the will of the Florida voters and operate outside the bounds of the law.”.
